Avast me hearties – the next adventure is just over the horizon!

NOLA Pyrate Week 2012 sails into New Orleans March 23 – April 1 for a gathering o’ Buccaneers, Corsairs, Privateers, Wenches, Doxies, Navvies, Land Lubbers, Musicians, Artisans…and anyone else in search o’ good food, good drink and good mates to share it with! We will be raising funds for wetlands restoration in South Louisiana and delivering it in person during the week…we also hope to be actively involved in some restoration efforts in Terrebonne Parish – at the very least, we will be journeying down to visit our mate Captain Wendy and her crew!

Thanks to our mate Stef  ‘The Decatur Dragon’ McClain, we have a very special spot for Pyrate HQ and the Merchants Market (Sat & Sun, noon-7pm) this year – The Balcony  Music Club! It includes a stage, indoor spaces, a courtyard and a fantastic balcony…conveniently located at the junction o’ the French Quarter and the Marigny Triangle! Stef is working with us to organize some other shenanigans…

The annual French Quarter Pyrate Parade is scheduled for Friday March 23 (6:30 pm line up) with celebratory refreshments afterwards with our good mates Thais & Tony at Pirates Alley Café! We have the perfect route so all can make it all around – families, veterans and other groups welcome – bring all yer mates! If ye have instruments or flags, bring ‘em!

If ye haven’t already, book yer lodgings…Merchants, Artisans, Tailors, Milliners, Chandlers, Performers…contact us to participate!

We are always happy to accept donations via PayPal/Credit Card toward the organizations we support and any operating costs that may be incurred (like parade permits, transportation and such)

More announcements to come…keep a weather eye on the website, pass the word and keep yer powder dry!

Elegant and excellent was that Pyrate’s answer to the great Macedonian Alexander, who had taken him; the King asking him how he durst molest the seas so, he replied with a free spirit: “How darest thou molest the whole earth? But because I do it only with a little ship, I am called Brigand: thou doing it with a great navy art called Emperor.” (St. Augustine, City of God, Book IV)

Sept. 19th has been christened “International Talk Like A Pirate Day” thanks to our mates Cap’n. Slappy & Ol’ Chumbucket – hilarity ensues at their website.

We do try to educate folk in the language o’ Pyrates and other sea going types anywhere we travel; in spite o’ the frequent shouts o’ “Arrr!” (and related Hollywood-isms) – “Avast” maybe, “Ahoy!” certainly, but never “Arrr!” unless yer nickname be “Chum” and ye’ve a hankerin’ to swim in shark infested waters!

Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates.
– Mark Twain, Life on the Mississippi

Pyrates, in fact, speak no differently than anyone else from whate’er port they hail from – what makes it seem different is the vernacular o’ the sea and the mixing o’ many cultures (at a time when cultures weren’t mixing well). On a Pyrate ship ye might easily find Irish, English, Scots, French, Moroccan, West African, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese…and anyone else who climbed aboard! Mix in specific nautical terms (scurvy, bilge rat, sea dog, mizzen, belay…) and ye begin to see why “regular” folk think it’s a whole new language!

So…read a book or three and learn some real Pyrate history (perhaps even the history o’ some o’ yer ancestors) and remember, the correct answer to “What’s a Pyrate’s favourite letter?” is “A Letter O’ Marque”!

Speaking of his ancestors:
According to tradition, some of them were pirates and slavers in Elizabeth’s time. But this is no discredit to them, for so were Drake and Hawkins and the others. It was a respectable trade, then, and monarchs were partners in it. In my time I have had desires to be a pirate myself.
Mark Twain’s Autobiography, chapter published in the North American Review, Sept. 1907

The third annual NOLA Pyrate Week (2011) was another successful & productive adventure – thank ye to all who attended, participated & supported us!

New Orleans Book Festival 2011
Before it even officially started, we sponsored the first annual New Orleans Book Festival at the Audubon Zoo and brought two good mates with us to promote their books along with the many other fine local authors…it was also Earth Fest at the Zoo and a perfect day for weather!

NOLA Pyrate Week kicked off on Friday with our best parade to date – Kreweloads o’ Pyrates, landlubbers, families & children! We had all kinds o’ amazing throws (and we helped support ARC of Greater New Orleans by purchasing recycled throws from them), lots o’ Pyrate flags & banners (including our own 2 custom flags from The House of Dirk & Arrow – HIGHLY recommended) and drums, whistles, tambourines & several grand sets o’ lungs! Our mates Tony & Thais of Pirates Alley Café put out a wonderful spread and hosted our parade after-party!

Thanks to both Don Powers & the NOPD for their parade escort and Jaguar & The Guardian Angels team for their security.

The Merchant’s Market visited the Audubon Aquarium to help launch their new “Parakeet Pointe” exhibit and we had a great 2 days there (in spite o’ a brisk wind on Saturday)…some o’ the most original and spectacular handmade goods ever seen! Our favourite face-painter, Irina, kept a constant stream o’ young scallawags (and a few adults) looking as colourful as the parakeets! Our thanks to all the Merchants & Artisans who joined us. The hearty volunteers from the Gulf Restoration Network joined us both days and were very busy educating folks about the plight o’ the Gulf Coast and it’s adjoining wetlands.

Our Gunner’s Mate, Irish, single-handedly raised $125 in donations for wetlands preservation & restoration!

Our thanks to The Whiskey Bay Rovers (and their wenches) for their exceptional musical talent at both the Merchants Market and a lagniappe performance at The Rendon Inn Saturday night!

Saturday night we journeyed to the Hi Ho Lounge to visit our good mates Debauche for their “Russian Hooligan Party” featuring the lovely ladies of Slowburn Burlesque.

Sunday night we were privileged to attend a spectacular performance at One Eyed Jacks of “The Wizard Of Oz” featuring the uncompromising talents of Fleur De Tease.

Throughout the week, Pyrates ventured out across the city for food, drink & entertainment…from MidCity (J’anita’s at The Rendon Inn), to Metarie (Phil’s Grill, book sales at Barnes & Noble and Borders), The LGD (The Avenue Pub) & Uptown (Oak Street) to the Marigny (Mojito’s Rum Bar & Grill), the Bywater (The Joint) to the Bayou (Capt. Wendy’s Wetland Tours). We visited old friends and made many new ones along the way.

We wrapped the week up with a trip down to S. Terrebonne and Captain Wendy’s highly informative Wetlands Tour and a visit to the Old Algiers Riverfest.

Our donations this year went to support lowernine.org, Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, Gulf Restoration Network and the Goodchildren Social Aid & Pleasure Club. We were also a primary sponsor of the New Orleans Book Festival, supported ARC of Greater New Orleans and donated 150 pounds of beads to a children’s parade.

A quick THANK YE to all who joined our merry crew for the Merchants Market – and a special thank ye to our mate Cheryl of Audubon for graciously hosting us at the Aquarium!

Despite some rather heavy winds on Saturday, everyone had a good (if somewhat tiring) weekend and we all made new connections & new mates! There was a tremendous display of artistic talent among the lot o’ ye!

The volunteer crew from Gulf Restoration Network stuck it out and hopefully raised a lot of awareness of their excellent work…we salute them for their efforts!

Also thanks to the lads and lasses o’ The Whiskey Bay Rovers for keeping everyone entertained (and for the extra service of playing for J’anita’s at The Rendon). Great music, great folks – we know ye’ll do well and look forward to hearing ye in future!

As NOLA Pyrate Week moves on, we ask that ye keep in touch – we’d love to have ye back again next year (and have some interesting plans in the works).
Until then, we encourage ye to keep a weather eye on our website, encourage yer mates to do the same, and certainly if ye can, “GIVE something back” to folks like the Gulf Restoration Network and others who are working to restore & rebuild New Orleans and Louisiana. About a week ago we received a very nice invitation from Carla at Mojito’s Rum Bar & Grill – a place that features at least two of our favourite things (Rum & anything Grilled).

Located at the pointy end o’ The Marigny Triangle (Esplanade Ave. at Frenchmen St.), they come highly recommended as having fabulous food & drink and personalities to match! The menu features something for every meal from breakfast (open at 08:30am) through dinner and even “Jazz Brunch” on Sundays…a flavourful Caribbean/Creole mix!

Unable to resist any longer I visited the other day & met the charming owners and staff…the food is flaming BRILLIANT! I had a nicely spiced cup o’ Seafood Gumbo made with chunks o’ fish in it and Crispy Fried Conch Fritters that not only lived up to the name, but were accompanied by a homemade Chutney that was – to mangle the vernacular – “off the anchor!” Compliments to Chef Sunny Cree!

Did I mention RUM? Obviously a place called Mojitos must serve a few – in fact they serve eight custom Mojito’s…but here’s even better news, they have…wait for it…over THIRTY kinds o’ RUM! It’s a Pyrate paradise…add to that the beautiful courtyard full o’ green plants and sunshine and the fact they have nightly live music and ye have a great spot to enjoy a drink, a meal and the company o’ good mates!
