A Fine Point Made!

Ahoy, mates! We hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. Our recent Family Pyrate Day, (an original NOLA Pyrate Week festivity) was filled with treasure, music, food & fun! It’s always a pleasure to visit with our mates on the “Wet Bank” of New Orleans – Algiers Point is a wonderfully welcoming community that is growing forward at their own pace.

Activities

  • Treasure Hunt: Little buccaneers and their families embarked on a thrilling treasure hunt, solving riddles and following clues to uncover hidden treasures. We tip our hats to both the Library & the community for joining in the fun!
  • Pyrate Crafts: Our craft station was a hit, with kids and adults alike creating pyrate themed art – and applying many colourful (but temporary) tattoos!
  • Live Music: The Confetti Park Kids Choir, The Katydids, and Dave Famous regaled us with original and traditional songs, with much applause from the crowd. The QM & the Captain even joined in for a few rounds of “Drunken Sailor”!
  • Food: From hot Boudin Burritos, to Steamed Shumai, and freshly shaved Snoballs, everyone enjoyed a variety of flavours!

One of the main goals of Family Pyrate Day is the sense of community and camaraderie! Families, friends, and neighbours came together to celebrate, creating lasting memories and forge new friendships.

We owe a hearty “THANK YE!” to Bargeboard NOLA for hosting us – and for being a massive hub for community rebuilding & renovating, promoting local artists, teaching and generally building up the community. If ye haven’t visited them yet, make the trip! Bargeboard is a location for architectural salvage of all kinds (shutters, pillars, doors, furniture…), advice/help with Historic Renovations, custom Millwork onsite, a wealth of local art for your walls & body, and a community hub for local events like a healthy food market!

Of course, no Family Pyrate Day would be complete (or even exist) without the exceptional effort and participation of Katy Hobgood Ray and the Confetti Park Kids! Katy & the young singers introduced us to two fantastic new songs – keep an ear out for their new music, now with even more Pyrates! The crew added their names to THe Great Book Of Pyrates, and we were well impressed with the fine handwriting of these young pyrates – most in cursive!

The Katydids kept the music flowing throughout the day, and a special musical performance by “Dave Famous” (aka David Ray) that was a privilege to hear – I truly felt some of those lyrics!

Special shout-out to Jen Wolfe Photography who captured some great images during the day – and even made a couple of ol’ Pyrates look good!

We extend a hearty thank ye to all who made this event possible. From our dedicated volunteers to the talented performers and storytellers, and of course, to all the families who joined us for a day of pyratical fun!

Stay Connected: We’d love to see your photos from the day! Share your favourite moments with us on social media using the hashtag #FamilyPyrateDay (tag/follow the Captain on Instagram & BlueSky)! Keep an eye on our website for updates on future events and activities – make sure you’re “on the account” to be among the first to find out

Until next time, fair winds, following seas, and full tankards! QM Seika Hellbound & Capt. John Swallow
